Steve Forbert at Mauch Chunk Opera House

Released at the height of the new wave explosion, his 1978 debut Alive On Arrival offered a first look at his colorful mix of spare acoustic introspection and scrappy rock ‘n’ roll and became one of the year’s most acclaimed albums. While critics tagged him—like Bruce Springsteen and John Prine before him—“the next Dylan,” Forbert never put too much stock in the comparison and forged his own path, expanding his audience substantially with 1979’s commercial breakthrough Jackrabbit Slim and his era defining hit single, “Romeo’s Tune.”

By this time, the heyday of the classic 70s singer-songwriters was quickly fading, and as the seventies gave way to the eighties, Forbert’s plainspoken, heartfelt early recordings were among the few keeping the joyful and innocent spirit of the genre alive. Given the mythic nature of Forbert’s early career, one can be forgiven for wondering what he’s done since parting company with Geffen Records after they released The American in Me in 1992. The fact is that Steve Forbert has never stopped writing, singing and performing and has released twelve studio albums, three live sets and four DVDs since 1978.

Montana Skies at Mauch Chunk Opera House

These award-winning musicians delve into music from Pink Floyd and Rush, to Vivaldi, as well as their own originals that have been featured everywhere from NPR to the Travel Channel. Combining elements of classical technique, jazz improv and the power and energy of rock n’ roll, Jonathan’s guitar wizardry and Jenn’s blazing electric cello combine to create ear candy and sonic surprises. While the music defies simple categorization, it is a fusion in the truest sense of the word. It’s been called everything from chamber rock to psychedelic strings. Whatever you want to call it, this ain’t your granny’s chamber music.

Jonathan and Jennifer met while studying music at the University of Georgia, in Athens, GA. “We love composing and arranging, and appreciate the opportunity to present old favorites, along with newer music, to our audiences.” What has resulted from this new musical freedom of expression between the two is a unique style of music that has attracted instant recognition and praise.

Mauch Chunk Opera House Welcomes The Eilen Jewell Band

Eilen Jewell’s music has a way of getting to you.  While her country- and blues-infused songwriting has been favorably compared with contemporaries like Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, Jewell’s approach is equally inspired by jazz divas like Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. Her new release “Queen of the Minor Key” was recorded in a cabin in the mountains of Jewell’s Idaho home, but it conjures images of smoky downtown jazz clubs and swinging honky-tonks on the wrong side of the tracks.  Once you hear her, you can’t help but stick around for more.

Eilen band is comprised of modern players authentic to Americana and Jazzy swing sound.  Once on stage the influences are evident and the songs are poetically pure and emotionally honest.

The Allentown Band at Mauch Chunk Opera House

This Presidents Weekend we celebrate The Allentown Band, the oldest civilian concert band in the United States, which has played a continuously active role in the musical life and cultural fabric of the community since its first documented performance on July 4, 1828. Their goal is the most enjoyable sounds their exceptional musicians can produce—whether it be an overture transcribed from opera, a modern composition written especially for concert band, or a Sousa march.

John Philip Sousa’s influence on the Allentown Band can’t be underestimated. Albertus L. “Bert” Meyers, cornet soloist with Sousa in the mid-1920s, served as conductor of the Allentown Band for fifty years. Today, under the direction of Ronald Demkee, the “Sousa style” continues as an integral part of the twenty-first-century Allentown Band.

A typical Allentown Band schedule fluctuates from concert stage to baseball park, from university commencement to Allentown’s Symphony Hall to New York’s Carnegie Hall. Besides being frequently seen on local television, the Allentown Band is recognized worldwide, having twice appeared on national TV—Charles Kuralt’s Good Morning America, and the PBS series The American Experience in a feature called “If You Knew Sousa”—and heard on radio—regularly on Philadelphia’s station WRTI, and as far away as Sydney, Australia.

Savoy Brown at Mauch Chunk Opera House

Featuring the great British guitarist Kim Simmonds, Savoy Brown set many standards for the English blues-rock sound here in America. We will help them celebrate the release of their scorching new CD, Voodoo Moon.

One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA, invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band helped the rock and roll music of the 1970’s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today.

From London’s Soho night clubs in 1966, to headlining the world’s most famous venues (Carnegie Hall, Fillmore’s East and West, Cobo Hall), Savoy Brown has done it all.  The band continues to tour worldwide and give a glimpse into the past and inspire new listeners with their personal brand of rocking boogie, blues and rock.
